KALW's director Matt Martin told the board the station has won regional and national reporting awards and is expanding local and bilingual programming.
Martin highlighted an Edward R. Murrow'winning documentary about differential 911 responses in Oakland, an ongoing San Quentin reporting series produced with incarcerated reporters, and a newly distributed Spanish-language podcast project. KALW is developing an audio academy (a yearlong tuition-free training program), running internships with Burton High School and planning a 75th-anniversary schedule for 2016.
He reported improved fiscal health: at the end of the prior fiscal year the station held a cash reserve of just over $600,000 on a roughly $2.2 million budget, and individual listener support is on target. KALW is pursuing a strategic plan with priorities including fundraising, facilities continuity during Burton High renovations, events strategy and digital-audience development.
Board members thanked KALW for its reporting and community work and encouraged continued outreach to district families and students.
