Superintendent highlights Willie Brown middle school outreach, Smarter Balanced testing, water savings and staffing changes

Superintendent Richard Carranza used the Jan. 13 board meeting to highlight several district priorities and operational developments.
Carranza said district leaders canvassed the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood to promote the new Willie Brown Junior Middle School; first-round applications are due Friday, Jan. 16, and the district is targeting an initial enrollment of about 200 students. He emphasized that the school will be STEM- and arts-focused and encouraged families with fifth-graders to apply.
On assessments, Carranza said the Smarter Balanced Assessments are required by the state of California for students in grades 3 through 8 and grade 11, administered on computers and aligned to the Common Core. He said the district will host informational nights for parents and provide materials through the district's communications channels.
Carranza also reported operational successes: the district reduced water usage by 43% in November as part of a citywide conservation effort, surpassing a 10% target, and credited facilities staff and student engagement for the savings.
Personnel announcements included promotion of Rita Madhavan to chief financial officer (replacing Joe Grazioli, who is retiring) and the upcoming hire of Melissa Dodd as chief technology officer (joining full time in April). Carranza thanked partners including the mayor's office, Deloitte and the Department of Children, Youth and Their Families for professional-development work with principals.
