Board adopts AP Statistics and AP Calculus texts after committee review, allocates $398,000 for materials

The Board of Education voted unanimously to adopt new instructional materials for high-school AP Statistics and AP Calculus after a recommendation from the curriculum committee.
Jim Ryan of Curriculum and Instruction said the decision followed an eight-week teacher-led review. The selected AP Statistics text is The Practice of Statistics (Starnes, Tabor, Yates, Moore) and the AP Calculus text is Single Variable Calculus, Early Transcendentals (7th ed., James Stewart). Ryan said the district needs new copies after enrollment increases in advanced courses and because previous editions were more than a decade old and could no longer be re-ordered.
Staff estimated approximately 1,300 students will take AP Calculus and 700 will take AP Statistics in the coming year; the total purchase of roughly 2,000 books is projected at $398,000. Curriculum committee members noted that digital copies are included as part of the adoption and that materials had been available in the boardroom for review prior to the vote.
Commissioners thanked the teachers, curriculum staff and committee members for the selection process. The board approved the recommendation by roll call (7 ayes). Staff said materials will be ordered in time for the start of the next school year and digital resources will be available to sites.
The adoption was presented as item H on the agenda and was carried forward with a positive recommendation from the curriculum committee.
