Parents urge SFUSD to find permanent Mission District site for Indian Education program

Three members of the Parent Advisory Committee for the Indian Education program addressed the board seeking a permanent, stable location for their program. Rachel Treba said the program has moved multiple times in recent years and described the disruptive effects on students and families: "We're looking for a permanent location for our program...we have moved four times since the reinstatement of the Indian Education program in the last four years."
Michelle Anton asked the board to prioritize the program and keep it in the Mission District because of established relationships with community organizations there: "We feel that this program is not fulfilling its full potential without a permanent location...We would like it to remain in the Mission District."
Gloria Molt added that permanency helps students develop continuity and community support.
Deputy Superintendent Guerrero and facilities staff said they are actively searching for a viable permanent site and have identified additional options; they stressed that program representatives must confirm a chosen space meets their needs. Chavez (facilities) explained the program is currently in shared cubicle/cafeteria space at Cesar Chavez and will remain there through the school year unless a permanent site is found. "Our goal...is to identify a permanent location that fits the needs outlined by the PAC," staff said.
No formal action was taken during the meeting; staff committed to continue site visits with program representatives and to report back with a recommended permanent location as soon as practicable.
