The Multilingual Pathways Department’s draft plan focuses on three main areas: improving English language development (ELD) instruction by aligning newly adopted California ELD standards with the Common Core State Standards and SFUSD’s pre‑K core curriculum; strengthening primary‑language instruction and developing common‑core‑aligned curriculum in Chinese (including Mandarin/Cantonese), Spanish, Korean and other dual‑language pathways; and expanding parent/community engagement via DELAC/ELAC support and data sharing.
Strategic actions described include district‑wide and site PD/coaching, ELD diagnostic assessments to guide instruction, curriculum development and maps in multiple languages, and establishing research‑department agreements to monitor outcomes. Chavez told the board that about 48.2% of English learners met the ELA academic target and staff will present more detailed metrics at upcoming meetings.
Board members requested additional detail on metrics, the scope of curriculum translation/development and timelines for implementation; staff said follow‑up presentations are planned to connect the Title III plan with Common Core rollout and multilingual pathway plans.
