SFUSD board approves routine items and several appointments, reports closed-session actions

The San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education on Feb. 12 voted to approve routine business and confirm several appointments.

The board approved the prior meeting minutes of Jan. 24, 2012, following a motion and roll-call vote recorded by the clerk. The board then recessed the regular session to convene as the SFUSD Financing Corporation, during which Rachel Norton was named president of the financing corporation, Sandra Lee Feuer was named vice president and Richard A. Carranza was named secretary-treasurer; the roll call for those officer appointments passed by recorded vote.

The board also appointed Shamann Walton to the Quality Teacher and Education Act Oversight Committee (QTEA) after executive director Mary Richards read the superintendent’s recommendation; the board recorded seven ayes. The board further approved the appointment of Kathleen Catalina Ruiz Healy to the City and County of San Francisco Elections Commission for a five-year term beginning Jan. 8, 2013; commissioners spoke in support before a recorded unanimous vote.

Under item O the full consent calendar was adopted by roll call with multiple individual abstentions noted on specified K items; the clerk announced that "everything adopted." Item F10 (a resolution recognizing retirements) had been removed for board discussion and was later approved with recorded ayes and the noted exceptions recorded in the roll call.

The board reported several closed-session actions taken Feb. 5: approval of the employment of one vice principal and one supervisor, expulsions of two middle-school students and a stipulated expulsion agreement for one high-school student, and a superintendent evaluation decision (the final performance target was approved 6 ayes, 1 nay).

The meeting adjourned following a memorial for former superintendent Dr. Arlene Ackerman.
