PAC raises graduation gaps and equity concerns; district names new PAC coordinator

SAN FRANCISCO — At its Oct. 23 meeting the Board of Education heard a Parent Advisory Council (PAC) report that emphasized graduation-rate disparities and announced a staffing transition.
Ruth Grabowski, the outgoing PAC representative, told the board that PAC—s priorities include examining high-school graduation requirements and that the group is "very concerned about the number of students who are not on track to graduate right now and really especially about the disproportionate impact on African American, Latino, and Samoan students." She said PAC has been participating in task-force conversations and community briefings and will submit questions to the curriculum committee.
PAC also publicly announced that Georgia Williams Bratt, the current PAC chair, has accepted the district—s offer to become PAC coordinator effective next week. Board members thanked Grabowski for eight years of service and presented her with an award and a district appointment.
Context and next steps: commissioners discussed follow-up questions about disproportionality in special-education categories and requested data that had been shared previously (for example, numbers of students in nonpublic placements and grade-level trajectories).
