UCSF–SFUSD partnership highlights student interns; Wallenberg senior presents neurology research

UC San Francisco’s Science & Health Education Partnership (SEP) presented to the San Francisco Board of Education on Sept. 11 about its long-running work with SFUSD.
Catherine Nielsen, co-director of SEP, told the board the partnership is about 25 years old, involves hundreds of UCSF scientist volunteers who work in district classrooms, and reaches thousands of students each year through hands-on science lessons and larger events such as the Bay Area Science Festival. Nielsen said SEP’s high-school summer internship places about 20 SFUSD juniors in UCSF labs each year for biomedical research experiences and college-preparation support.
Chelsea Stewart, a senior at Wallenberg High School and a 2012 SEP intern, presented her research findings and gave the title of her study as "T cell recognition of aquaporin-four in neuromyelitis optica." Stewart described working in a neurology lab, participating in poster and research talks, and gaining technical and college-preparation skills through SEP. Board members praised SEP’s impact and cited high college-going rates among program alumni presented during the meeting.
The board thanked UCSF and SEP staff and noted continued collaboration to expand internship opportunities across district schools.
