Parents press SFUSD over bus-route cuts; board staff to follow up on routes and security contract

Parents representing more than 50 families told the board that bus-route cuts had disrupted transportation from Sherman Elementary to multiple after-school programs and threatened children's continued enrollment in those programs.
Gomati Sudashavan said the changes were not clearly communicated and that families had not been given feasible alternatives. "This disruption has caused many parents to consider change of school," she said, asking the board to reinstate the route or provide options for working parents.
Board members asked staff for the selection criteria used to eliminate routes and requested that staff provide contact information so a district executive could follow up with affected parents. Executive Director Orna Keith was identified as a staff contact and the superintendents office agreed to have staff answer parents questions.
On a related operational matter, Commissioner Morase severed consent item K11 (security-personnel contract) for discussion and sought clarification whether the vendor positions matched classifications discussed during budget negotiations. Associate Superintendent Kevin Truitt said the contract is with an outside vendor (not district police), that these are not district employees and that last year the district offered overtime first to school security staff; he said the district would repeat that process this year and follow up with athletics and security staff.
What happens next: Staff agreed to contact the parent who raised the bus-route issue to explain criteria and explore alternatives. The K11 security contract remains subject to board review in committee and staff follow-up.
