Parents, students and clergy urge district to retain Bayview bus routes to Alice Fong Yu
Summary
Dozens of parents, students and Bayview community leaders told the board cutting yellow bus service to Alice Fong Yu would reduce access for CTIP families and harm school diversity; district staff said no cuts were anticipated for 2012–13 and promised written follow‑up by Friday.

A large group of parents, students and community leaders addressed the board during public comment to oppose proposed elimination of school bus stops serving Bayview Hunters Point to Alice Fong Yu (referred to repeatedly as Alice Fung U/AFY). Speakers stressed that about 9 percent of the school's students rely on yellow bus service, that many Bayview families depend on the bus to get children to school safely and on time, and that cuts would reduce diversity and educational access.
Lillian Fong, chair of the Alice Fong Yu site council, said cutting the Bayview stops would disproportionately affect CTIP families and limit the district’s ability to close achievement gaps. Reverend Theron L. Jones said Bayview students represent a substantial portion of AFY’s enrollment and asked the board to reconsider any proposal that would reduce slots for Bayview students.
Deputy Superintendent Carranza responded during public comment that staff had been meeting with school representatives and parents, were working to minimize impacts, and "we do not anticipate at this point cutting any services to Bayview Hunters Point…for the twelfth [sic] of this school year"; she said the district expected to provide written information to the community by Friday.
Parents and students described practical hardships if service were cut: lost work hours, safety concerns on Muni routes and reduced access to what they described as a high‑performing school.
