Board names Deputy Superintendent Richard Carranza incoming superintendent

The San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education voted unanimously April 24 to approve an employment agreement naming Deputy Superintendent Richard Carranza as the district’s next superintendent.

Board President Yee took the item up as a special order of business and staff read the agreement’s principal terms. Materials provided to the board listed a multi‑year appointment and an annual salary figure of $245,000 in the packet. The board then conducted a roll‑call vote; each board member recorded an affirmative vote and the president declared the appointment unanimous.

During public remarks and collegial board discussion before the vote, multiple speakers including Superintendent Carlos Garcia and union representatives praised Carranza’s instructional leadership and his continuity with the district’s strategic plan. Commissioner comments emphasized the district’s interest in maintaining momentum and avoiding leadership disruption.

After the vote, Carranza thanked the board, his family and colleagues, and said his background as a classroom teacher and district administrator will shape his priorities. "My focus will continue to be a focus of a teacher," Carranza said in brief remarks, adding that he is ‘‘honored and humbled’’ by the appointment.

The board moved on to the next agenda items after Carranza’s remarks. The employment agreement and roll‑call record were entered into the meeting minutes by the clerk.
