Board honors philanthropist Warren Hellman, recognizes DELAC and donates bullying‑prevention books

The board next recognized the District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC) for parent leadership in supporting English learners, calling up members and introducing the new DELAC board. The board also accepted a donation from the Japanese American Citizens League of children's books by Catherine Otoshi addressing bullying and tolerance; Otoshi described writing from a childhood memory and thanked the district for distributing the books to elementary libraries.
Separately, staff honored workers from the 1601 Turk Street project and San Francisco Unified School District maintenance staff whose actions on Dec. 22, 2011 helped wake residents and secure neighboring buildings during a large fire. The superintendent and facilities staff named contractors and district employees for certificates of appreciation.
