Board approves consent items, celebrates George Washington High School and records closed-session settlements

- Consent calendar: The consent calendar was moved and seconded. Several items were corrected, postponed or removed by staff and board members for later action. Commissioner Feuer pulled item K22 for discussion; Commissioners Marcy and others severed items K3, K5 and K11 for separate consideration. After discussion the board approved the severed K22 item by roll call.
- Instructional materials resolution: At the public hearing the board adopted a resolution finding that pupils have sufficient textbooks in the four core curriculum areas and noting insufficiencies in foreign language and health materials for take-home use.
Closed session
The board reported outcomes of closed sessions earlier this month and at the meeting: approval of contracts for one director, one principal and two assistant principals; approval of three separate OAH settlements for $3,000 each (cases DB v. SFUSD; DH v. SFUSD; JH v. SFUSD); and acceptance of a classified employee resignation with a reimbursement agreement for $14,300.34. The board also approved joining other districts and associations in litigation against state finance officials seeking funds.
Next steps: Items postponed by staff will return to the October 11 meeting or be scheduled for first/second reading as appropriate. The board instructed staff to provide follow-up information on severed items.
