Student commissioners present immigrant youth summit findings, plan follow-up

A youth commissioner told the board the October immigrant youth summit recruited 99 students from seven schools, found inconsistent access to resources and supports for immigrant and undocumented students, and pledged a follow-up report with surveys and recommendations for counselors and schools.
Huimin ("Happy") Yang, a senior at Balboa High School and a youth commissioner, told the Board of Education that an immigrant youth summit on Oct. 28 brought together 99 students from seven public high schools to share experiences and recommend policy changes. Yang said the summit found many immigrant students are "not well informed of existing resources, programs, and services" and that the quality of supports varies by school.
Yang said the summit identified gaps for undocumented students and urged better counselor outreach related to AB 540 and the California Dream Act. She said the youth committee is preparing student surveys and compiling breakout-group notes to produce a findings report with action steps and expects to return to the board with a more substantive presentation in January.
Maire D'iria, director of the Youth Commission, said the commission hopes to present school-site-specific recommendations at Mission, Lincoln and Washington and will coordinate follow-up with the mayor's office and principals.
Board members asked for survey data on the countries students represented and for specific feedback on how counseling is meeting the needs of AB 540 students; Yang said she would include those items in the forthcoming report.
