Superintendent highlights 10,000-person enrollment fair and Prop A support

Superintendent Dr. Garcia told the San Francisco Board of Education on Tuesday that the district's enrollment season is underway and praised staff and families for turnout at a weekend fair that drew "over 10,000 attendees." She said the fair "kicks off the enrollment process" and thanked the Educational Placement Center and principals, parents and students who supported the event.
Dr. Garcia highlighted the outcome of the recent bond measure, saying the community delivered "almost got 71% vote from the public to pass Prop A," and thanked co-chairs Myung Lee and Phil Halpern and facilities director David Golden for their work on schools-and-bonds projects. She said the facilities team has helped deliver projects on time and under budget and that the district now has a final third of work to complete on its capital program.
On facilities, Dr. Garcia said the district plans a new Willie Brown school and noted a December ribbon-cutting is planned at John O'Connell High School for a new CTE facility. She also congratulated Mayor Ed Lee on his election and said the district looks forward to continuing a collaborative relationship with the city.
The superintendent announced that legal counsel Maribel Medina will leave the district for private practice; Medina's departure will be her last board meeting after nearly four years with SFUSD.
The superintendent closed by wishing the community a safe Thanksgiving and thanking district staff and families for their service to students.
