Laura Maloney, executive director of Parents Education Network (PENN), presented the organization's work supporting parents and teachers of students with learning disabilities and described the student-led Safe Voices program that mentors and empowers high-school students with learning differences.
Maloney said research shows substantial misunderstanding about learning disabilities and described PENN's programming, including a speaker series and teacher training. She introduced Safe Voices students who described their experience and requested support to expand the program's reach into SFUSD schools.
Safe Voices and organizers invited board members and districts to help promote the Education Revolution conference (Ed Rev) scheduled for April 16 at AT&T Park (9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) and asked the district to encourage student participation and distribute materials. Student speakers described Ed Rev as a community that "strives to empower ourselves and others through advocacy and outreach." (Tim)
Commissioners thanked the presenters, asked about age ranges (recommended ages 13-18) and meeting schedules for Safe Voices; organizers said Safe Voices meets about once a month and will hold a local meeting on March 19 at the San Francisco Friends School from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m.
The board welcomed the group and encouraged communication and distribution of resources to school sites.
