San Francisco Board of Education elects Hydra Mendoza president, Norman Yee vice president

Hydra Mendoza was elected president of the San Francisco Board of Education at the board—s Jan. 11 meeting after a nomination from Dr. Madrasi and a roll-call vote that produced six ayes. Commissioner Norton nominated Norman Yee for vice president; that nomination likewise passed by roll call.
Mendoza, speaking after her election, thanked colleagues and framed the board—s immediate work around district finances. "We have a very large budget deficit that we're gonna be faced with over this next year and probably over the next several years," she said, adding that the board and superintendent would "work diligently to try to make this less painful." Mendoza also thanked former president Jane Kim and welcomed the newly sworn mayor, saying she expected continued partnership with city leadership.
Board members conducted the elections according to the rules announced at the start of the meeting (voice nominations, roll-call votes). The board then proceeded with committee business and scheduled follow-up work on the district budget in the weeks ahead. The board did not take additional formal action on the budget at the meeting; Mendoza said public engagement and staff analysis would follow.
