SFUSD superintendent flags 12 persistently lowest-achieving schools, warns budget could mean layoffs

Superintendent Carlos Garcia told the Board of Education on March 9 that the state released a list of persistently lowest-achieving schools and that 12 San Francisco Unified School District schools appeared on that list. He said district staff plan to seek clarification from state and federal officials about the criteria used and to contest placements they believe are in error.
Garcia also framed the budget picture as precarious: he said district leaders are negotiating contracts and working with partners but warned, "if we don't come to some types of resolution soon, then when May 15 rolls around, we'll have no choice but to make the 900 layoff notices more permanent." The superintendent and the board emphasized pursuing alternatives to permanent job loss and said they would continue outreach to Sacramento and federal partners about funding.
The board also used the night to recognize district administrators. The RAVE Distinguished Service Award and multiple region awards were presented to principals and administrators across the city; award recipients and United Administrators of San Francisco representatives praised staff for leadership despite fiscal challenges.
Next steps. The board asked staff to provide additional information on the criteria used by the state list, to continue contract negotiations, and to report back on budget and personnel impacts at upcoming Committee of the Whole and budget committee meetings.
