SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Unified School District board accepted for first reading a petition to create Mount Kilimanjaro Charter Boarding School, a proposed boarding-model charter described by founders as aimed at serving high-need and underserved students.
Two founding members, Teresa Coleman and Darnisha Wright, told trustees they developed the petition to offer a structured, culturally responsive environment for students who have struggled in traditional settings. "Every child that comes to Mount Kilimanjaro Boarding School will have the expectation that they will succeed," Wright said.
Board members discussed committee referrals needed for a petition of this type, noting that a boarding school raises facilities and possible personnel questions in addition to curriculum and program oversight. The chair indicated the petition would be forwarded to curriculum, budget and buildings/facilities committees, and staff noted that facilities reviews and accreditation considerations are typical for a boarding-model petition.
No decision was made at first reading; trustees will review committee reports and staff analyses in subsequent meetings.
