Speakers included community conveners and program directors representing early-adopter sites. Rachel Iborra, community convener for Bernal Heights and Paul Revere College Preparatory School, said the initiative “is an opportunity to strengthen communities” and transform school communities through partnerships. Carol Hill, director of the Bayview Beacon program, described New Day as “a catalyzing force for change” in the district’s neighborhoods.
Commissioners asked for assurances about sustainability and community empowerment. Several speakers stressed that New Day’s early data from other districts show gains and cited state and local partners who would support site development. The board adopted the resolution by a roll-call vote of seven ayes.
