The San Francisco Board of Education on April 28 adopted a resolution declaring Thursday, May 28, 2009, Bike to School Day and urged schools to promote bicycling and bicycle safety. The resolution passed after suspension of rules and a formal reading by Commissioner Kim.
Commissioners said the resolution supports efforts to reduce childhood obesity, promote active transportation and support academic performance through increased physical activity. The board heard from Mark Caswell of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, who thanked the district and described funding that allowed bike-rack installation at eight schools and plans for temporary bike-rack assistance through the MTA and volunteer staffing for school events.
Partners including the Presidio YMCA and SFPD bicycle unit are working with the district and the coalition to provide bike rodeos, weekend skills sessions and volunteer-led commuter convoys to encourage safe group rides to school. Staff and coalition representatives said they would prioritize school sites with feasible routes and existing interest and would aim to place temporary or permanent racks where practical.
The board voted 7-0 in favor of the resolution and encouraged principals to participate and to coordinate with district sustainability staff and community partners.
