Board renews Creative Arts Charter School after wide public support

The San Francisco Unified School District board voted to grant a five-year renewal to Creative Arts Charter School’s petition, approving the superintendent’s recommendation that the charter be renewed from July 1, 2009, through June 30, 2014.
The renewal followed a sizable block of public comment in which students, parents and teachers described arts-integrated instruction, higher student engagement and improved attendance. ‘‘Creative Arts is fun,’’ a third grader said as part of parents and pupils who urged the board to preserve the school’s small, arts-focused environment. Principals and district staff said the school’s program aligns with the district’s strategic plan.
District staff read amended language into the record requiring that, if renewed, Creative Arts Charter School negotiate and execute in good faith an annual memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the district before August 2009 and abide by applicable local, state and federal laws.
Board members commended the school community and noted follow-up work to address concerns raised during the renewal review. The board took roll call and approved the renewal by recorded vote.
The board’s action implements the superintendent’s recommendation and directs staff to finalize the MOU and monitor compliance with charter terms. The school community was invited to provide any outstanding documentation to district staff to finalize the renewal paperwork.
