The Board of Education on Jan. 13 approved a resolution supporting the establishment of staff wellness programs and initiatives across the district. The resolution references the district’s existing Healthy Schools Nutrition and Physical Education Policy and calls for nutrition and physical education opportunities for staff at all levels.
Commissioner Winns and others praised the initiative and clarified it does not change the existing wellness policy but implements staff wellness activities consistent with previous policy direction. The roll call recorded unanimous approval by commissioners present.
Earlier in the meeting Matt Martin, general manager of KALW, gave the station’s annual report. Martin said KALW receives about 78 percent of its revenue from individual listeners, roughly 9 percent from federal sources and about 10 percent from other grants. He projected a possible $210,000 shortfall this fiscal year amid declines in individual giving and outlined fundraising and cost‑control efforts. Martin described existing district collaborations (broadcasting board meetings, student projects like "Stories During Wartime," and work with the new Academy of Information Technology) and invited commissioners to identify potential community partners or resources.
Board members thanked KALW for its work and emphasized opportunities to expand student involvement and seek joint grant funding to support station‑school collaborations.
