SFUSD adopts 2009–10 instructional calendar, directs planning for earlier 2010–11 start

The San Francisco Unified School District Board unanimously adopted the instructional calendar for the 2009–10 school year on Dec. 11 and directed staff to begin planning a shifted 2010–11 calendar that would start earlier in the fall so that the fall semester ends before winter break, followed by a three-week winter recess.
Board presentation materials noted the calendar is set under the board’s authority and that the planned shift responds to strategic priorities. The board instructed staff to consult with parent organizations, after-school and summer-program partners, labor unions and city departments to develop a detailed schedule and to provide sufficient notice to families.
Susan Solomon, representing the United Educators of San Francisco (UESF), said the union will work on the proposal but stressed the district must bargain any changes that affect the work calendar. "The work calendar is a mandatory subject of bargaining," she said, and the union was not committing to a specific calendar at this time.
Board members asked for clarity on timelines and public notice; staff said the intent is to announce an earlier 2010–11 start once planning and bargaining progress allows, and to negotiate details with labor partners before implementation. The motion to adopt the 2009–10 calendar carried by roll call.
