Board recognizes community literacy partners, hears parents and union concerns

The board publicly thanked the Bring Me a Book Foundation and the San Francisco 49ers Foundation for donating bookcases and books to Dr. Charles R. Drew College Preparatory Academy. Principal Demetrius Rice Mitchell described assemblies and classroom book activities, and 49ers Foundation executive Reginald (spoke on behalf of the foundation) described ongoing literacy and community investments.
Student delegates and Parent Advisory Council (PAC) members presented updates: student delegates described a student symposium and upcoming SAC elections; PAC representatives said their priorities are student assignment, after-school programs and parent outreach tied to the district strategic plan and announced a parent convention for Nov. 1.
During public comment later in the meeting, Dennis Kelly of United Educators of San Francisco asked the board to ensure teachers and the union are included in professional-development decisions funded under Prop A, arguing some agenda items appeared to pay nonmember consultants for work that should involve UESF members.
Board and APD presenters responded that teachers and site staff are being included in think tanks and co-design processes and that the district is working with union leadership to align work with Prop A commitments.
