The San Francisco Unified School District board read and adopted a resolution recognizing Oct. 16, 2008 as National "Lights On After School," a national celebration of after‑school programs. The resolution, presented by district staff, credited after‑school programming with providing safe, challenging and engaging learning experiences and supporting working families.
District staff noted that roughly 93 after‑school programs have provided community leadership in the district and flagged national funding shortfalls that threaten some programs. The board voted to adopt the proclamation during the meeting; staff then announced winners of an after‑school contest and presented certificates of appreciation to volunteers and partner organizations involved in the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass event.
The board’s action included a formal reading of the resolution and a roll call vote with the result recorded in the meeting as six ayes. The district said the proclamation was intended to raise awareness about the importance of sustaining after‑school opportunities.
