SFUSD board adopts FY 2008–09 SACS budget forms and approves several contracts and settlements

The San Francisco Unified School District board on Aug. 12 approved the district’s fiscal-year 2008–09 adopted budgets in the state’s standardized account code-structure (SACS) form and carried a series of other administrative items and settlements.
On a motion and second, the board voted to approve the FY2008–09 adopted budget and SACS forms for SFUSD and the San Francisco County Office of Education as prescribed by the state superintendent. Board members publicly thanked budget staff for timely work preparing the materials.
The board also approved a tentative labor agreement with International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 39 after the superintendent reported the contract had been ratified by Local 39 members.
In business items, the board authorized a contract with TriStar to continue serving as the district’s third-party workers’ compensation claims administrator. District staff reported that annual claims costs run near $6 million and that TriStar’s contract fee has remained unchanged from prior years. Board members requested that future renewals include a user-evaluation or survey of customer service and performance metrics.
The board approved several budget transfers. Staff explained that a $75,000 allocation for Horace Mann came from centralized TIG money set aside to meet state-directed intervention needs; the board held one transfer for Newcomer High School (a nonretroactive item) for first reading and approved the other transfers.
The meeting’s closed-session report noted multiple personnel approvals and litigation-settlement approvals, with recorded settlement amounts (examples cited in open session included $4,270; $10,000; $3,615; $24,000; $80,000/$80,500; and $3,600 for various matters). The board adjourned the meeting in memory of Ivan Miranda, a Mission High ninth-grade student who was killed in the Excelsior District weeks earlier.
