Board approves renaming Spring Valley Elementary to Spring Valley Science School

The San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education voted unanimously to rename Spring Valley Elementary as Spring Valley Science School.
Commissioner Yee read a resolution that recounted Spring Valley's history (founded in 1852), the Mamie Tait case and the school's sustained science program since 1992. The resolution directs the district to provide updated signage at the school's main entrance and becomes official upon passage.
Community members and alumni spoke in support. Parent Renee Valentine said the parents had "voted unanimously for 5 years" to preserve the school's name and favored "Spring Valley Science School" as the final name. Several speakers highlighted partnerships with UCSF, the Exploratorium and other Bay Area science organizations.
Principal Lonnie Chin was acknowledged in the reading and thanked for leading the school's science initiatives. Board members described the renaming as both a preservation of history and an opportunity to celebrate the school's science leadership.
The board adopted the resolution by roll call; the vote was recorded as unanimous.
