Supporters, including local small-school advocates and the Internationals network, said the school would serve recent immigrant students and would allow the district to offer a specialized newcomer pathway aligned with the district’s strategic goals.
Board members asked about the vetting process and whether the item should go to curriculum committee; staff proposed cabinet review and one additional administrative step and estimated a return for second reading in June so the school could participate in fall enrollment planning. Members of Small Schools for Equity and SFOP urged the board to accelerate approval so the newcomer-focused program could be ready to hire a principal and recruit students for the coming year.
The resolution advanced as a first reading; staff said it will proceed through internal administrative review and be placed on the June agenda for a second reading and possible approval.
