SFUSD amends policy so students who attempted exit exam remain eligible for certificate of completion

The San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education amended Board Policy 6,105.4 to remove the requirement that students take the February administration of the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) in order to be eligible for a district certificate of completion.
Under the revised language read by district staff, students "who have passed all of the district's course and credit requirements by the end of their senior year and have taken but are unable to pass [the CAHSEE] may receive a certificate of completion" if they have used supplemental interventions offered at their school site. The change substitutes language allowing a student to be eligible if they have attempted the CAHSEE at any time.
Board members framed the amendment as recognition of students who complete district requirements but miss a specific test window due to timing or unique circumstances. Commissioner (Jane) asked whether students who enrolled after the February test date could be accommodated; district staff said some students enter the district post'February and the amendment was intended to address those cases.
The board approved the amendment by roll call (7 ayes). The board did not identify any immediate budgetary impact and asked that the amendment be folded into district communications about graduation and supports for students still attempting to pass required assessments.
