Board ratifies tentative contracts with certificated and support staff unions

The San Francisco Unified School District Board on Oct. 9 authorized district leaders to enter tentative agreements reached with its two major employee unions during the 2006–2007 negotiations.
Dennis Kelly, president of United Educators of San Francisco, told the board that UESF members approved the certificated contract by “an approximately 82 vote,” and urged the board to ratify the agreement. District negotiators described long bargaining sessions that extended into the early morning. The board took a roll-call vote and approved the certificated tentative agreement.
The board also authorized a tentative agreement with the district’s support personnel. District staff reported a correction to the financial figure in the support personnel settlement, noting the correct line on page 21 should read $10,453,852 rather than the earlier figure. The item was read into the record and approved by vote.
Board members and the superintendent praised bargaining teams on both sides for reaching mediated settlements. The superintendent and several commissioners described the increases as modest but said they represented a step toward better compensation and labor stability.
The board’s action authorizes the district to finalize the tentative agreements and proceed with ratification procedures; the text of the full agreements and final ratification steps were discussed as part of the public record.
