Board adopts Arts Education Master Plan advisory committee, adds arts-provider seat

The San Francisco Unified School District Board voted to adopt the Arts Education Master Plan (AEMP) and authorized the superintendent to appoint an advisory committee to guide implementation. The action followed a curriculum committee recommendation and testimony from arts advocates and educators.
Staff described the proposed advisory committee composition to include the chair of the San Francisco Arts Education Funders Collaborative, two representatives from the San Francisco Arts Commission, a chair of the Arts Providers Alliance, a mayor's office representative, a higher-education representative focused on the arts, representatives from Parents for Public Schools and the local PTA, three SFUSD arts teachers (elementary, middle, high), three SFUSD principals (one per division), one SFUSD student advisory council participant, and other central office staff at the superintendent's discretion.
Commissioner Jane Kim and other members pressed for an additional community-based organization (CBO) practitioner who currently works in schools. The board amended the resolution to add one arts-provider practitioner; the amendment passed on a recorded roll call with seven ayes. The AEMP as amended then passed on final roll call.
Board members and presenters praised the steering committee and community partners for two and a half years of outreach to craft the plan. The board asked staff to proceed with constituting the advisory committee in line with the approved membership and to return with updates on implementation as appropriate.
No specific funding changes were adopted at the meeting; the resolution dissolves the former AEMP steering committee and establishes the advisory committee structure to guide use of existing and future arts funding.
