The San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education on March 13 endorsed a formal "Partnership for Achievement" with Mayor Gavin Newsom and the City & County of San Francisco intended to deepen coordination between city agencies and the district.
Claudia Sandoval, director of city and school partnerships in the mayor's office, told the board the agreement is meant to formalize existing collaborative efforts and to maximize joint work between the city and district. "The agreement highlights 6 specific areas, but really the spirit of it is for the school district and the city to come together to respect each other's roles and to complement each other as they both work and benefit of the children," she said.
Senior Chief of Policy and Operations read the resolution's resolve clauses and said the board thanks Mayor Newsom for his leadership and authorizes the superintendent to develop any formal agreements necessary to implement the partnership, including co-convening an education roundtable with community, business, labor and student representatives.
Board members expressed broad support for the framework and asked staff to engage supervisors and community partners as implementation planning proceeds.
Next steps: Superintendent and mayor's office will coordinate formal agreements and convene stakeholder roundtables as planned; the board requested staff return with any formal agreements for approval.
