Civic Design Review shows early changes for SFO Terminal 3 West modernization

At the Nov. 4 meeting, Civic Design Review Chair Abbie Schneier presented recent committee feedback on early Phase 2 designs for the SFO Terminal 3 West modernization project.
Schneier described a set of design adjustments intended to reduce glare and improve the passenger experience: the ground-level glass canopy was changed to metal, a frit pattern on remaining glass and vertical fins were added to diffuse solar radiation, and a clerestory "scoop" was introduced to bounce natural light into the interior rather than produce harsh glare. The design team also proposed a softened arched brow to relate visually to the international terminal while maintaining a modest profile.
"I think it's going to be an incredible improvement for SFO," Schneier said, praising the project's attention to user comfort and facade simplification. The committee also approved Phase 1 of the Keysight Pavilion renovation, Jackson Playground Phase 1, and reviewed a Phase 1 San Francisco Fire Department Division of Training project and a small Great Famine Memorial project.
No public comment was recorded on the Civic Design Review report at the meeting.
