Visual Arts committee highlights SFO murals and conservation work on city monuments

At San Francisco International Airport's Harvey Milk Terminal 1, Craig Calderwood’s three-story mural "The Only Blue is the Sky" (executed with Presida Eyes muralists and featuring Susan Cervantes) spans three levels and celebrates queer history and culture while honoring Harvey Milk. Commissioner Farris also noted Suzanne Husky’s intervention titled "Close Encounter with California Sublime," which alters an 1866 Albert Bierstadt landscape to prompt viewers to consider commodification of wilderness.
Jett Martinez’s 'Fog Lilies' mural was presented for the West Side Pump Station; the façade work is approximately 2,800 square feet and is intended to complement the site and surrounding walkway. The committee also reviewed three major conservation projects—Mechanics Monument, Dewey Monument, and Lotta’s Fountain—including before-and-after imagery and 3-D scanning work to replace missing elements.
Commissioners praised staff conservation efforts and discussed the public visibility of pieces at SFO and along Market Street; several commissioners encouraged colleagues and the public to view the completed works.
