At the Jan. 6 meeting the Planning Commission adopted a resolution extending authorization for remote hearings for an additional 30 days, allowing the commission to continue virtual meetings while monitoring conditions for an eventual return to in‑person hearings. The motion to extend passed unanimously, 7–0.
Staff told the commission there was some prospect of reconvening in City Hall in February, which would mean the Planning Commission’s first in‑person hearing could occur in March, but cautioned circumstances may change. Director Hillis explained that many staff remain working from home per Department of Human Resources guidance and thanked personnel who continue to provide in‑person services at the permit and public information counters.
Public commenters urged preserving remote access and recommended adjustments to remote public participation: one caller suggested retaining three‑minute comment slots for the remote format and longer periods for certain requests, and another asked staff to ensure microphones are positioned and tested so remote participants can hear clearly. Commissioners discussed ways for the public to access large documents (EIRs or plan sets) by scheduling in‑person review appointments at the planning department and reiterated that staff are available by email and phone.
The resolution to continue remote hearings for 30 days passed on a unanimous vote. The commission will revisit the format as public‑health and operational conditions change.
