Planning Commission endorses hiring process, sets closed-session schedule for director search

The San Francisco Planning Commission on Nov. 7 formally endorsed a multi-step process to recruit and recommend candidates for the city’s next planning director.
President Melgar summarized work with the Department of Human Resources: the position was posted for 21 days and attracted 19 applicants (18 staff-identified as qualified). The commission must complete a mayor-directed fairness-in-hiring training (about 15–20 minutes) before members may receive candidate materials. Sean Sherburne of DHR said training completion and transmission of certificates will allow staff to distribute application packages.
Commissioners debated timing for closed sessions and interviews given Thanksgiving and holiday schedules. The commission agreed to multiple closed-session dates to review resumes and to interview finalists, aiming for deliberations on Nov. 14 (closed session to review resumes) and interviews on Dec. 5, with contingency dates discussed. The commission voted unanimously to endorse the process and to proceed when commissioners complete the required training.
What happens next: commissioners will complete the training and the department will release candidate materials to commissioners who have complied; closed sessions will be held for screening and interview scheduling and the commission will forward a short-list of candidates to the mayor.
