Planning commission delays Cap Street demolition appeal to June 14 after packed public comment

Neighbors and neighborhood advocates urged commissioners to decide the appeal now rather than allow another postponement. Lucas Eastwood, the project sponsor, asked for more time, saying hehas been doing outreach and needs additional weeks to pursue talks with neighbors and potential community partners. Opponents told the commission that the proposal to demolish an intact single‑family house for luxury replacement would worsen displacement pressures in the Mission District and that a pattern of repeated continuances has worn down community participation.
Commissioners debated whether additional outreach would change entrenched positions. Several commissioners said the sponsorhad submitted outreach materials during the hearing and that limited further discussion might be productive. Commissioner Melgar moved to separate the continuances and to continue all items except the Cap Street hearing; he said he would support a short continuance for Cap Street specifically. The motion to continue items 1 and 2 passed unanimously. The commission then voted 5–1 to continue the Cap Street hearing to June 14, with Commissioner Richards dissenting.
The continuance means the hearing will return to the commissioncalendar on June 14. The commission asked staff to note the communityoutreach submitted at the hearing, including a spreadsheet of contacts and petitioner letters the sponsor provided, and to circulate that material to commissioners ahead of the rescheduled item.
