The Planning Commission on Nov. 16 denied a proposal for a 75‑room AC Hotel by Marriott at 1196 Columbus Avenue after several hearings and extensive public comment.
Sponsor Sajjan Hansji said the project would create union construction and hotel jobs and noted outreach and a recently signed mitigation agreement with a nearby community group. Supporters said union jobs and hotel employment would benefit low‑wage workers.
Neighbors, tenant advocates and residents of nearby senior and disability units urged the commission to reject the hotel and preserve housing at the site. Commenters raised concerns about noise, rooftop mechanical impacts, increased traffic and removal of long‑standing housing stock.
Commissioners debated land‑use fit on the north side of Bay Street and whether the parcel should remain residential. After deliberation the commission voted 4 to 3 to disapprove the project, with Commissioners Johnson, Melgar, Moore and Richards voting to disapprove and Commissioners Fong, Coppell and Chair Hillis voting in favor of the project.
