Mining Exchange redevelopment presents public‑art proposals for 350 Bush Street

Planning staff told the Commission that the 350 Bush Street project is nearing completion and that the project’s conditions of approval require a public‑art component valued at 1 percent of hard construction costs. Christy Alexander said the sponsor is working with the Berggruen Gallery and has commissioned two works that will be publicly accessible: a roughly 10‑foot stainless steel sculpture by Zhan Wang for the Pine Street plaza and a pair of large oil paintings by Christopher Brown to be installed inside the Mining Exchange lobby facing Bush Street.
Jeffrey Heller of Heller Manas Architects, representing the project team, described restoration milestones for the Mining Exchange and showed the Commission how the artworks would relate to the public plaza and the historic building’s restored frontage. Heller noted the project will preserve and emphasize the Mining Exchange frontage and provide public access to the lobby art during business hours.
Commissioners thanked the team and asked a few clarifying questions about timing and final approvals; no public comment was offered on the art component. Staff and the sponsor said the final art concept and locations will be submitted to the planning director for review in consultation with the Commission as required by the project’s conditions of approval.
