Planning panel approves Apothecarium’s move along Market Street amid broad neighborhood support

The Planning Commission approved a mandatory discretionary review authorizing the Apothecarium medical cannabis dispensary to relocate from 2095 Market Street to a slightly larger ground-floor space at 2027 Market Street.
Planning Department staff recommended approval, finding the site compatible with the neighborhood commercial transit district and noting the project is not within 1,000 feet of any school. The department reported widespread outreach and 197 letters of support from neighborhood groups and residents.
Apothecarium co-founder Ryan Hudson described the dispensary’s community involvement and philanthropy, saying the operation had given more than $335,000 via its philanthropic advisory board. "With their help we've gone 5 years without a single police incident or even a neighbor complaint," Hudson said of the current operation and community record. Counsel Brett Gladstone emphasized the sponsor’s voluntary measures, including policies against on-site consumption and commitments to act as a good neighbor.
Several neighborhood associations and the Castro Merchants Association testified in favor. Commissioners characterized the application as a relocation within the same district and approved the proposal with conditions; the motion carried on the record with commissioners present voting in favor.
