The Planning Commission voted unanimously 6–0 to grant conditional use authorization for El Metate, a long‑standing Mission District restaurant at 2406 Bryant Street, to sell beer and wine on the premises. Elizabeth Waddie, assistant director of current planning, told the commission the department found the request consistent with the R‑H‑3 zoning concentration threshold (25% commercial frontage within 300 feet) and noted the department had received a petition with 434 signatures supporting the change.
Project sponsor Francisco Hernandez and family members described the restaurant’s decade‑plus community role, donations and local partnerships. Dozens of neighbors and community organizations spoke in favor of the extension during public comment, saying the business is family‑friendly and anchors the block. One speaker noted El Metate’s longstanding community donations and the owner’s ties to local groups. Staff noted the restaurant would not change exterior features and would be limited by condition to close at 10 p.m.
Planning staff also clarified that outdoor tables and chairs fall under Department of Public Works purview; the sponsor has removed unpermitted furniture, filed for the proper street‑use permits, and staff expected the table/seat permits to be granted shortly after the hearing.
On the motion to approve with conditions (including hours limits and compliance with DPW permitting for outdoor seating), Commissioners voted Aye (Antonini, Hillis, Johnson, Moore, Richards, President Fong) and the motion passed 6–0.
Next steps: department staff will finalize conditions and process any DPW permits for outdoor seating; the license will still require a liquor license from the state ABC if other approvals are obtained.
