Staff recommended creation of a 1500 Page Street Affordable Housing Special Use District (SUD), conditional‑use authorization and a referral recommending Board of Supervisors legislation to amend the planning code as needed.
Community reaction: Project sponsors reported extensive outreach and neighborhood support from the Haight Ashbury Improvement Association and neighborhood council. Speakers from local nonprofits and neighborhood groups described the project as a rehabilitation of a historic resource that would add badly needed affordable units with minimal exterior changes.
Action and vote: The commission moved to approve the SUD, zoning map and planning code recommendations, and conditional use authorization with staff amendments; the motion passed unanimously 7–0.
Next steps: Staff recommended that the Commission’s action be transmitted to the Board of Supervisors for enabling legislation for the SUD and that the department incorporate a December 18 certificate of determination into the project record.
