Commission allows Children's Day School to keep temporary classrooms through 2024 with monitoring conditions

Planning staff presented a conditional‑use request from Children's Day School to retain three temporary classroom structures at 333 Dolores Street until Feb. 2024. Staff said no physical changes or enrollment increases are proposed and that the project meets the subdivision‑code criteria for conversion; the department recommended approval with conditions to prevent the portables from becoming permanent.
"The school is requesting to retain the structures for another 10 and a half years, to 02/2024," staff said, noting corrected typographical errors in the five‑year rental histories previously provided to the commission.
School representatives explained the sequence of renovations and fundraising that led to the request and said construction will begin on the separate 601 Dolores site in spring; portables are last in the sequence and intended to be removed when permanent facilities are ready. A nearby resident asked that the school address stored materials, standing water and vermin in the yard that abuts his home.
Commissioners approved the extension unanimously and added a condition requiring the school to remove blight, maintain the yard free of storage and submit biannual progress reports to staff with an informational presentation to the commission after five years.
The motion passed by roll call with all commissioners voting aye, 6–0.
