The commission approved a conditional use authorization enabling Town School for Boys to occupy the Palace of Fine Arts on a temporary basis while its Jackson Street campus is under renovation. Project sponsors said the lease runs through June 2014 (with an option to extend to Sept. 30, 2014) and that the school would relocate roughly 200 K—4 students and supporting staff to the facility; no building alterations were proposed.
Neighbors and residents raised safety concerns about pick-up and drop-off, outdoor play at Little Marina Green and pedestrian crossings of Marina Boulevard. Town School and its headmaster described a rear-drive pickup plan on the west side of the parking lot, staff escorts for outdoor activities, coordination with the Fire Marshal and a safety escort ratio (minimum three adults for groups crossing to Marina Green). The commission voted to approve the conditional use with standard conditions and clarifications about access and safety protocols; the motion passed unanimously 7-0.
