Board continues 571 Myra Way permit amid structural concerns, orders monitoring and engineering coordination

San Francisco’s Board of Appeals on Jan. 9 continued review of the alteration permit for 571 Myra Way after neighbors and DBI described excavation and retaining‑wall work that exposed adjacent foundations.
Neighbor Dan Kleinman told the board that excavation had removed a retaining wall and exposed the foundation adjacent to his home, and that a structural engineer’s review concluded the new retaining walls were not adequate to protect his property. DBI senior inspector Joe Duffy said the department has been handling complaints and notices of violation related to the property since 2016 and that one permit was revoked; he recommended engineers for the permit holder and neighbor meet to design a mitigation plan.
The permit holder’s representative said they would cooperate to reconstruct and strengthen retaining walls per the appellant’s engineer. The board voted to continue the matter to Feb. 27, 2019; it ordered immediate survey monitoring (to be paid by the project sponsor), required a site visit by DBI, and directed submission of revised and accurate plan sets to the board office by Feb. 21. Commissioners emphasized urgency and the need for DBI engineers to participate in designing any remediation.
