Planning Department's Commerce & Industry Inventory shows jobs up and construction spending rebound in 2011

Planning Department analyst Scott Edmonson presented the 18th edition of the Commerce & Industry Inventory, a city data compendium covering population, employment, building activity and monetary transactions through calendar year 2011.
Edmonson highlighted key indicators: "Jobs were up 2% ... at 559,000 jobs at the end of 2011," and "Unemployment was down to 8.6% from 9.5%." He told commissioners construction spending was estimated at about $3.4 billion, a 52% increase over the previous year. Staff said they plan to publish the underlying CNI data electronically by summer 2013 and are exploring public training for neighborhood-scale users.
Commissioners asked about oddities in the transport ridership and some sector categorizations; Edmonson and staff committed to follow up on mode-specific and regional-category questions and to provide neighborhood-scale clarifications when data are posted.
