Planning Department staff gave an informational briefing on the Mission District Streetscape Plan, describing the plan's purpose, process, priority projects and implementation strategy.
Ilaria Salvadore told the commission the plan emerged from community workshops and interagency coordination and is intended to create a network of green streets, traffic calming, alleys improvements and public spaces. She said a grant of $741,000 from the California Department of Housing and Community Development supported development of the plan and staff estimated an approximate total capital cost of $95 million for the long‑term project list. Salvadore highlighted early‑move projects already funded and noted a road‑diet restriping on Folsom Street supported by $1.2 million from the Transportation for Livable Communities program.
Commissioners focused questions on maintenance funding, coordination with Muni/MTA transit projects, and ensuring design details preserve safety and long‑term stewardship. Salvadore said staff will return on Nov. 16 for a formal adoption hearing, including review of CEQA findings and proposed general plan amendments.
Why it matters: The plan identifies priority projects that could change street design and public spaces across the Mission, connect to transit investments and channel capital funds. The informational hearing did not request any action but set the schedule for an adoption hearing in November.
