Commission declines to approve Verizon antennas, schedules full hearing

Rob Geller and other public speakers urged the commission to remove wireless siting proposals from the consent calendar and hold fuller hearings to examine cumulative impacts across neighborhoods and transparency in decisionmaking. Commissioners questioned the application’s claimed benefits — several said the proposed installation would increase data capacity but not coverage — and asked for evidence showing the extent of any speed improvement.
An initial motion to approve the application failed (three commissioners voting yes, one no). The commission then voted to continue the item to a full public hearing on June 17, 2010 so staff can be present to respond to technical questions and the public can provide additional input. Staff noted scheduling constraints that required selecting a date when planners would be available to present the item.
