Commission extends 1645 Pacific DEIR written‑comment deadline to Jan. 19 after neighborhood objections
Summary
After extensive public testimony criticizing the 1645 Pacific draft EIR for understating bulk, height, shadow and historic impacts and for tight timing over the holidays, the Planning Commission extended the written‑comment period to 5PM on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010.

Neighbors and business owners packed the Planning Commission hearing on Dec. 10 to critique the draft environmental impact report (DEIR) for the proposed 1645 Pacific Avenue project, raising concerns about bulk and height, visual character, shadows on Pacific Avenue, loss of high‑bay commercial space and historic resource treatment. Several neighborhood groups requested more time to review the document because the DEIR had been published close to Thanksgiving and the written‑comment deadline overlapped the holidays.
Pat Cenino, Frank Cannata and multiple speakers from the Middle Polk Neighborhood Association and PANA detailed perceived shortcomings in the DEIR’s visual and historic analysis and asked the commission to extend the comment period so community groups could prepare more thorough written comments. Commissioners debated distribution timing and whether staff had received and circulated the DEIR to commissioners in a timely manner; some commissioners said they received the document only the previous week and urged more time for public review.
After discussion, Commissioner Seguin moved to extend the DEIR written‑comment period by two weeks; the commission voted to accept staff’s recommended new deadline and the chair announced the written comment period would now close at 5PM on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010. Staff noted that comments would be transcribed and addressed in the comments‑and‑responses document prepared for the final EIR.
